Westin Copley Place Teams Up with Clean the World

Ever wonder what happens to all those pretty white-tea scented bath products that you see in your Westin hotel room bathroom? You love indulging in them while you’re here (and we want you to!), but shudder to think about all of those little plastic bottles ending up in a landfill somewhere, right? (Even if they are made out of recycled plastic!)

At the Westin Copley Place, we are always looking for new inventive ways in which we can go the extra step, play as a team, and do the right thing.  So when we were given the opportunity to partner with an organization called Clean the World, it just made sense to us.

Clean the World Foundation, Inc. was founded in February 2009 by two road warriors who wondered what could happen if hotels didn’t throw away used soap and individual bottles of shampoo. Their Mission is to collect discarded soap and shampoo products, sanitize them, and distribute them into the hands of impoverished people, preventing hygiene-related illnesses.  Since its inception, the Foundation has put over 4 million soap bars and 200,000 pounds of shampoo and conditioner back into human use, simultaneously eliminating over 380 tons of waste.  So far, they have successfully touched lives in 80 countries worldwide.

The housekeeping team at The Westin Copley Place is very serious about its participation in the hygiene revolution. Instead of tossing your leaf shaped bars of soap into the trash, we gather them in a collection bin. Averaging roughly 20 pounds of recycled amenities a day, we make twice-weekly shipment to Clean the World’s state-of-the-art recycling facility in Florida.

Having tracked our progress since beginning our partnership on June 24, we were so proud to ship our 2,000th pound to Orlando this week!

So when you check out of the Westin Copley Place and you leave a ¾ full bottle of lotion on your marble counter-top, take a moment to smile and think about our housekeeper who is going to make sure that bottle goes to a life-saving cause!

Thanks for the blog post. Just to update the statistics, Clean the World — with the tremendous support of nearly 1,200 hotel partners in North America — has collected and recycled more than 8.5 million soap bars in two years and distributed them to people in need in the United States, Canada and more than 45 countries. We’ve also distributed more than 250,000 lbs. of bottled amenities while diverting more than 600 tons (1.2 million lbs) of hotel waste from polluting local landfills. All of this is done as part of our global hygiene revolution to help stop the spread of preventable diseases, such as acute respiratory infection (pneumonia) and diarrheal diseases, most of which can be prevented by regular hand washing with bar soap. Thanks to Westin Copley Place and the entire Starwood Hotels and Resorts corporation for your commitment to Clean the World. Soap saves lives.
