Maria over Mike Any Day
It was a beautiful night last night; breezy and balmy and I found myself walking around the North End with a desire for something sweet. I didn’t feel like waiting in the long line of Mike’s Pastry so I stumbled into a little patisserie on Cross Street (46 Cross Street) called Maria’s Pastry Shop. The air was sweet and the shop quaint but the goodies were plentiful. Maria’s cases, refrigerators and shelves were lined with confections! It was hard to choose what my indulgence was going to be! I was able to sample the marzipan, toto cookies, sfogliatelle, scalatelli and chocolate tororone.
Everything was amazing but if I had to choose a favorite, it would have to be the macaroons! You can find these delectable treats in the refrigerator, which keeps them sugared on the outside but chewy on the inside. Keep them out overnight if you prefer them a little harder, but I thought they were perfect just the way they were.
These are just a few of the traditionally Italian confections that Maria bakes each day in her ovens. You can also find gelato, tiramisu, imported nuts and candies and of course, cakes for all occasions. Maria’s Pastry Shop is open Monday through Saturday, 7am-7pm and again on Sundays from 7am-5pm. Once you taste Maria’s pastries, I promise you will never go back to Mike’s!
