Earth Day Boston 2011

Earth Day 2011 is tomorrow, April 22 and it’s a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.

Many people here in the United States celebrate Earth Day by planting trees, making nature crafts at school or home, recycling, getting their children to recycle their old toys and cleaning up litter. Some wear green and/or brown, cook a special Earth day meal, ride their bikes instead of driving to work or school and going to Earth Day fairs.

You can use the internet to find many more ideas to celebrate Earth Day, as many celebrate it in different ways. Surf the net and find out what other people in Boston have done or will do to get ideas. Also, Boston.com has its own special on events in and around Boston on Earth day. http://www.boston.com/thingstodo/family/gallery/earthday2011/

How will you participate on Earth Day 2011 this year?
